Growing up as a teenage rock guitarist I was obsessed with shredders like Zakk Wylde, Paul Gilbert and Yngwie…

Their ability to rip through the fretboard with devastatingly fast and accurate speed picking lines always floored me.

I wanted so badly to be able to shred like those guys.

But no matter how many shredding DVD’s I watched…

And no matter how many hours I spent practicing slowly to a metronome…

I just couldn’t seem to ‘crack’ the technique.

Eventually I gave up and settled for techniques that felt easier to me, like legato and hybrid picking.

Even though those techniques are cool, it always bugged me that I couldn’t pick fast.

But… something crazy happened to my playing recently, that made me realise the story I had been telling myself for close to two decades… was a big, fat LIE.

I’ve destroyed a limiting belief that I had been clinging to for years...

That being that I would never be able to speed pick like my favourite shredders!

Now I can finally shred with strict alternate picking aka “speed picking”.

The breakthrough I had that allowed me to dramatically increase my speed?

It didn’t come from increasing my practice hours… ❌

Or practicing with a metronome… ❌

It came from making just 3 small adjustments to my picking technique.
