Woodturning a piece of Maple firewood I thought might have some figure. While it did end up having figure, I found the different colorations and patterns in the sap wood to be very beautiful. Let me know what you think of this vase in the comments.
I was debating if I wanted to use dye to really bring out the figure. However, I was worried if I did, I might lose the definition of patterns and colors in the sap wood. So, for the first application of finish, I just used boiled linseed oil. My thinking was that if I did not think the figure was popping enough, I could easily remove the finish and start over. As opposed to, if I had started with shellac. I then decided to use a garnet colored shellac to try and accentuate the figure without losing the definition of the colors and patterns in the sap wood.
