We decided to tour the Connecticut State Capitol, checking another capitol off our list! ABOUT THE CONNECTICUT STATE CAPITOL BUILDING:
Perched on a hill overlooking Bushnell Park, the Connecticut State Capitol stands as one of the most distinctive capitol buildings in the United States. The building’s stunning gilded dome is visible from miles away, the overall height of the tower is 257 feet above the rest of the building. Intricate carvings and statues on the exterior honor Connecticut’s rich heritage including Revolutionary War heroes and other political and social figures and icons.
Built from 1871 to 1878 and completely restored between 1979 and 1989, this National Historic Landmark and third capitol building for the State of Connecticut is a masterpiece of High Victorian Gothic design. One of the most impressive features of the building, as with many other capitols we’ve visited, is its rotunda, a beautiful space with intricate marble columns, colorful stained glass windows, and the ceiling of the dome high above. Throughout the Capitol are statues, paintings, and carvings that celebrate Connecticut’s contributions to American history. From Revolutionary War heroes to groundbreaking inventors, every piece tells a story of resilience and innovation.
