◎ Yakage Town, a traditional buildings preservation district, is a district where historical streetscapes are preserved, located in Yakage Town, Oda County, Okayama Prefecture. This district has a history of flourishing as a post town on the Sanyo Road, which was established during the Edo period, and many of the townscapes and buildings from that time remain. Yakage has flourished as a post town since ancient times, and many travelers and merchants passed through it. In particular, townhouses and merchant houses built from the late Edo period to the Meiji period remain, and the atmosphere of those times is strongly felt.

◎ Old Sanyo Road
The old Sanyo Road was one of the main official roads (roads established by the government) in Japan from ancient times to the Middle Ages, and was a key transportation route running east-west through western Honshu. The Sanyo Road was one of the "Five Kinki Seven Roads," and refers to the route from Kinai (present-day Kansai region) through the Sanyo region (present-day Okayama Prefecture, Hiroshima Prefecture, Yamaguchi Prefecture, etc.) to Kyushu. The current National Route 2 and Sanyo Main Line largely follow the route of the old Sanyo Road.

◎Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings is one of the types of cultural properties stipulated in the Japanese Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties. Among the traditional preservation districts for groups of traditional buildings determined by ordinances and other regulations of Japanese cities, towns, and villages, the districts are those that have been selected by the national government (Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) as being of particularly high value, based on the provisions of Article 144 of the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties.
