◎Horyu-ji Temple
Horyu-ji Temple is the head temple of the Shotoku sect, located within the mountains of Horyu-ji in Ikaruga-cho, Ikoma-gun, Nara Prefecture. It has no mountain name, and its principal image is Shaka Nyorai. When it was first built, it was called Ikaruga-dera (Ikarugadera), and later became Horyu-ji Temple, and is also known as the Temple of Horyugakumonji.
◎Horyu-ji Temple, located in Nara Prefecture, Japan, is the world's oldest wooden building complex and was founded during the Asuka period. Horyu-ji Temple is an important temple that had a major impact on Japanese culture along with the introduction of Buddhism, and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
◎UNESCO World Heritage Site The architectural complex of Horyu-ji Temple is divided into the Western and Eastern Temples, and most of the buildings, including the Golden Hall, Five-story Pagoda, Lecture Hall, South Gate, Middle Gate, Yumedono Hall, and Corridors, have been designated as National Treasures. In 1993 (December 11, Heisei 5), it was registered as Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage Site (cultural heritage site) along with Hoki-ji Temple, as "Buddhist Monuments in the Horyu-ji Temple Area."
◎Founding: Horyu-ji Temple was built in 607 by Prince Shotoku, who carried out the last wishes of his father, Emperor Yomei, to pray for the recovery of an illness. The founding of Horyu-ji Temple is deeply connected to the development of Buddhism in Japan, and Prince Shotoku played a central role in protecting and spreading Buddhism.
◎ Burning and Reconstruction: According to one theory, Horyu-ji Temple was destroyed by fire in 670 and then rebuilt between the end of the 7th century and the beginning of the 8th century. This rebuilt temple is the current Horyu-ji Temple, and the existing building is thought to be a replica of its original form.
