Video Not Working? Fix It Now

This video is based on the memories of Milan Syruček, a Czech entrepreneur, journalist, and writer. In the 1990s, he conducted business in Ukraine. He later wrote several books and essays, including recollections of those colorful years when European business circles were discovering Ukraine, and Ukraine was learning to conduct private business.

Milan Syruček's memories and thoughts are more interesting because he offers an unbiased view of the events of the '90s. He compares Ukraine, where he decided to do business, with his homeland, the Czech Republic, which had already undergone privatization and other economic reforms at that time. While the Czech Republic quickly rid itself of the socialism imposed by the Soviet Union, Ukraine was fumbling in search of its "own reform path," losing time and neglecting a window of opportunity that had opened at a certain point.

Now, in the 2020s, Ukrainians have no doubt about the independence of their political, economic, and cultural development. In the '90s, the widespread belief was that Russia better knew how to implement reforms. It was only years later that Ukrainians, including politicians and officials, saw that they had mostly copied Russia's flawed experience in organizing corrupt practices and transferring the country's industrial assets into the hands of a narrow circle of oligarchs.
