In the frozen northern reaches of Canada, the Ontario Northland Railway is a vital lifeline for remote towns and far flung industries. Hauling life-sustaining freight and passengers, hardened rail crews battle to keep the trains running year-round, with temperatures dropping to minus 40 degrees.
In this episode, a freight team collects cars of hazardous chemicals, requiring skilled specialist handling, while a high-tech laser geometry test train picks up track defects that must be urgently repaired ahead.
In the freight hub of Englehart, Conductor Robbie and Engineer Phil take charge of the networks longest and heaviest train; a fourteen thousand ton, two-kilometre long behemoth. But down the line, melt water could overwhelm an old culvert beneath the track, so Maintenance Foreman, Kip Moore races to dig out and replace the pipe before the next train arrives.
The huge trains running through the curviest, hilliest section of the line wear out train wheels and track alike. We follow engineers who must reprofile defective wheels in a machine called the ‘Wheel-o-Matic’, and a crew aboard a specialist Grinding Train, who smooth out worn out sections of the track.
Finally, pushing up the hills into North Bay, Phil and Robbie find their train’s weak spot. One of the joints between the cars breaks and they lose the back half of the train. Robbie fights to fix the joint and get the train home.
