In this video, we discuss how to determine whether an enamel pocket watch dial is hand-painted or produced using a transfer or photographic process. The larger American watch factories developed transfer processes in the mid-1880s, eventually leading to the end of hand-painted dials for standard production. This video inspects two dials fitted on watches produced by the Elgin National Watch Company - one from c.1867 and the other from c.1890.
