I was looking for a dragon / bat wing for a side project and struggled to find something easy to use, realistic and either free or affordable. There are some amazing bat rigs out there but they're expensive for what was going to be used in a shot for no more than 20 seconds. I decided to make one myself - starting with the preset rigs from Auto Rig pro and Rigify, but both are designed for traditional bird wings with feathers so it was more effort to repurpose them than to make my own wing with some simple controls. Once you've tried a couple of times the rig is simple and quick to make and the best thing is that using a cloth modifier means that weight painting in between the arm can be fairly sloppy, as most of the deformation is handled by the simulation.
The rig I create in this tutorial is the simplest version I could think of that still delivers great usability. Hopefully it's a helpful introduction to some basic rigging concepts. If you want to make it even more versatile you can add a dedicated hand bone off the arm for controlling the fingers more precisely or add additional constraints for more intuitive controls, but you'd be surprised at how much you can achieve with the few included in this video.
