The narcissist cannot imitate the mother’s gaze and does not know unconditional love. Though narcissists do imitate empathy or compassion, for example.
Narcissist idealizes the partner and allows her to see herself through his gaze (“hall of mirrors effect”), from outside herself.
This depersonalization (a dissociative effect) causes her to misinterpret the experience as unconditional love emanating from an external source (the narcissist): she mothers herself but attributes the mothering to the narcissist. It is self-love or self-infatuation mistaken for the narcissist’s love!
This is an example of Contagious Snapshotting, Infectious Introjection: the narcissist induces in the victim a conflation of internal and external.
The victim reacts to the narcissist’s INTERNAL dynamics as if they were EXTERNAL. Exactly like the narcissist, the victim simply mistakes the internal object with the external one the way you could mistake a reflection in the mirror for the real person.
This, in turn, is an example of the way the narcissist imposes his internal dynamics on his relationships (e.g., he never experienced separation, so merges symbiotically with his partner).
There is a compulsion to get rid of it and in order to MAKE SENSE of it the narcissist begins to cast the internal object (which he misperceives as external!) as dissonant and threatening.
