In this video I go back to the basics of walking technique to help you get started walking more fluidly, walking more comfortably, and walking with less impact on your joints. Visit my website: https://www.movementsphere.com/todd-martin-md
This is the first half of the full length video which was posted earlier. In this half, we look at basic tips to get started. In the second half, which I will post later, I get into the anatomy of the core movements used in walking.
I have discussed every imaginable aspect of normal walking technique in my other videos, so in this video I wanted to take you back to the basics in a way to help you get started. Please like, share, and subscribe. Walking technique is so important to good health and proper function, but so many times something can go wrong. Sometimes this is caused by injuries or medical problems, but sometimes it results just from bad habits. In many cases, with the proper instruction, these walking problems can be corrected. Join me in trying to spread proper walking technique to as many people as possible.
Basic Tips:
1. Posture:
Keep the head elevated, floating upward
Eyes should be forward with the gaze toward the horizon, not the ground.
Shoulders should be back and down with palms facing the side of the thighs
Pelvis is in neutral position, not tilted forward or backward
Feet should face forward
2. Arm Swing
Pay attention to your arms swing
Arms should swing forward on the side opposite the swinging leg
Arms should not swing across the body
The arms should flow naturally. If you arm swing is not present, you are probably not fully engaging your core
3. Foot Position:
The feet should face directly forward, parallel to one another
Avoid having your feet turned out at an angle
4. Foot Placement
The feel should place gently on the heel and then roll forward to the flat of the foot and then the ball
Avoid crashing into the heel
Listen to your foot impact. It should be soft and barely noticeable. A loud heel strike indicates something that needs to be corrected.
When you get the basic tips, then watch the Part 2 of How to Walk Correctly to learn more specifics about how to use the core.
