On Sunday, the 17th of November 2024, Steamrail Victoria operated their Rail & Sail tour to Geelong via Sunshine with steam locomotive K183.
The event started in the morning, having K183 transfer from the Newport Workshops to Southern Cross Station. At Southern Cross, the locomotive would use the middle track and switch ends of the carriage consist. The steam locomotive then chuffed out of the CBD and into outer-western Melbourne on the RRL (Regional Rail Link) where it would be restricted from speed as a dust storm blew over. After this, the train stopped at Sunshine, awaiting clearance to continue to Geelong. If the dust storm wasn't enough, K183 then faced high winds and rain which once again made the train stop twice.
After its journey from Melbourne, the train arrived in Geelong roughly 1 hour late, headed to the turntable so it could face funnel-first heading back to Melbourne, then coming back to the station and attaching back onto the carriages.
