I argue that lavender marriages are an expression of relationship anarchy within the bounds of an amatonormative and heteronormative society. We will dissect the origins of "lavender" to refer to queer people, gay artists through history, ancient and modern outlooks on homosexuality and partnership, modern usage of purple symbolism in feminist groups, and the lavender scare as a turning point in queer history. We will also examine the conditions which necessitate lavender marriage, such as Old Hollywood reputation, American military law, and Indian social-familial expectations. Finally, I ponder how the dynamics of a lavender marriage may be a unique form of relating to another person, within and beyond the confines of law, union, love, sexuality, and family.
