BYD has unveiled its new Atto 2 compact SUV, a model designed to become the Chinese carmaker’s most affordable SUV in Europe. Positioned below the already popular Atto 3, the Atto 2 offers compact dimensions (4,310 mm long and 1,830 mm wide) and a generous 2,620 mm wheelbase, which ensures abundant interior space and a robust SUV style thanks to the short front and rear overhangs.
The real strength of the Atto 2 is BYD’s Blade battery, integrated into the floor of the e-Platform 3.0 platform. This technology, called Cell-to-Body (CTB), uses the upper part of the battery as the floor of the cabin, maximizing energy density and improving the vehicle’s structural rigidity. Lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells ensure greater durability and lower costs compared to nickel alternatives.
The standard battery variant offers a capacity of 45.1 kWh, enough for a range of up to 312 km (194 miles) according to the WLTP standard. In the city, thanks to regenerative braking, the range can be increased to 463 km (288 miles). A version with a larger battery will be announced in the coming months, likely with a range of more than 400 km.
Inside, the driver will be greeted by a large 12.8-inch central display with rotatable orientation (portrait or landscape) and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. Physical buttons allow quick access to essential functions such as selecting driving modes. Distinctive details include the glass gear selector and grab handles, an unusual touch for an urban SUV.
