(Happy new year, by the way, and welcome to 2025! FYI - we tested the Lexus LBX in the final days of 2024)
The LBX exists because their previous compact SUV, the UX, was a little too mid to truly carve out the market slice that Lexus deserves. With competitors such as the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Audi Q2, the Japanese brand had to step it up.
And they did, taking the foundations from the humble Yaris Cross, and transforming it by sheer will and stubborn insistence, into a something truly worthy of the badge.
Akio Toyoda himself was intimately involved in its development, making small adjustments and giving minute but frequent feedback that could only be tolerated as company President, CEO, and heir to the namesake.
Years later, far longer than it should have taken, the LBX was finished. The specifications don’t tell the full story, or even most of it. The bottom line is that all the doting attention (and resulting engineer’s agony) can be felt, and Lexus now have a fantastic new SUV to add to their lineup, which is now in Malaysia.
