I enjoyed my first ride on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad with newly restored steam locomotive #1309 (H-6 class "Mallet") leading the way and diesel locomotive #501 (GP-30) bringing up the rear. I rode in the open air car directly behind #1309.
My ride started in Cumberland, Maryland under chilly and overcast conditions. As the train climbed into the mountains to the west, the sun came out and things warmed up making for a very nice day by the time we arrived in Frostburg, Maryland.
We had two unplanned stops as #1309 needed to bring up steam pressure to get going again. This was their first weekend of passenger service this year, and they still have some learning and fine-tuning to do to get accustomed to how she performs.
