Sew a perky, turned denim pot holder with no hand sewing. This cute item will showcase your great taste in fabric. Friends and family will always think of you when they are cooking their favorite foods if you give them well-made potholders. And these are fast and easy, perfect for Christmas, housewarming, or hostess gifts.
0:00 Staple item: denim goes with everything
0:33 Other turned potholders
1:04 Cut five layers 8.5 x 8.5 inches square: 1) Cotton batting 2) Thin denim 3) Quilters' cotton 4) Cotton batting 5) Insul-Bright [Place layers 2 & 3 with right sides together.]
1:37 You'll need a loop, if you want to hang them, about four inches long (leftover from napkins, or use some rick-rack or whatever you have.)
2:07 Layering is important because of the way layers crown
2:40 Topstitching will be our only closure for the piece--but they will wear and wash well and be attractive
3:49 Stitch around at 5/8" starting and stopping on the least stretchy side of your cotton fabric to minimize puckering. Leave a big hole for turning (use pins or otherwise mark the hole); also pin or mark the third corner for your loop
4:10 5:11 Follow one stable layer to pivot your corners, even if it isn't the top layer; I usually follow the decorative quilting fabric; this becomes second nature
4:44 Detail shots of loop placement--on the diagonal and then sew across it more than once
5:41 Trim all 4 corners, no closer than 1/8", leaving the loop corner a little longer
6:05 Turn out piece and pull and push out corners
6:51 Press and shape with steam
7:50 Topstitch closer than you sewed before (3/8" in this case) to close the potholder
9:12 Shape your work as you go...don't pull on the needle
9:42 Finished potholders
