Abstract:
People already have enough to worry about when it comes to planes falling apart in mid-air, the last thing they need is malware in the engines.
This talk will discuss the creation of an aircraft network testbed and the training of a machine learning system to defend it from cyber-attacks. Similar to hallucinations in large language models like ChatGPT, the behaviour of AI can often be strange. AI for cyber security is also subject to these oddities.
In this session, attendees will leave with an understanding of some of the challenges faced when trying to develop an autonomous intrusion response system trained using reinforcement learning.
Knowledge requirements: machine learning and network security.
Content warning: if you are afraid of flying/Air travel, maybe give this a miss.

Speaker Bio:
Matthew Reaney; Queen's University Belfast, Cyber-AI Research Student; Research Student @ Cyber-AI Hub, CSIT, QUB
Matthew Reaney is a PhD research student working on cyber security with AI. In particular he is investigating the use of reinforcement learning for response selection within network security of cyber-physical systems.
In his spare time, he enjoys hobby robotics and has been a long-term committee member of the Queen's Robotics Society.
