기린은 아프리카 동물들 중에서도 존재감이 돋보입니다.
머리에 뿔은 물론이거니와, 거무튀튀한 혀.
그리고 무엇보다 긴~ 목은
단연 이들의 아이덴티티에 방점을 찍어 주죠.
이들의 긴 목은
생물 선생님이 진화론 수업에서 밑밥을 던질 때
사골처럼 제시되곤 했죠.
다윈은 다양한 기린들 중 목이 긴 개체들은
먹이가 부족한 시기에 더 높이 있는 나뭇잎을
먹을 수 있었던 덕분에
살아남았다고 생각했습니다.
그리고 이렇게 살아남은 기린들의 “목이 긴 형질”이 유전돼
지금의 기린이 됐다는 거죠.
그런데 정말 기린은 먹이 때문에
목이 길어진 걸까요?
