Zhongshan City, commonly known as Zhongshan and formerly known as Xiangshan, is the only prefecture-level city in China named after a modern leader. It is located in the south-central part of Guangdong Province and is one of the cities covered by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The city borders Guangzhou City and Foshan City to the north, Jiangmen City to the west, Zhuhai City to the south, and faces Shenzhen City across the Pearl River Estuary to the east. It is located in the west of the Pearl River Delta, on the west bank of the Pearl River estuary. The south is a low mountainous and hilly area dominated by Wugui Mountain, and the north is a plain river network area. The Modaomen Water Channel, the main stream of the Xijiang River, flows through the western edge, and the Hongqili Water Channel, the main stream of the Beijiang River, runs diagonally across the northeastern boundary.
Zhongshan was formerly known as "Xiangshan" because of the many exotic flowers and plants in Wugui Mountain (it is also rich in "exotic flower fairy tea"). "Taiping Huanyu Ji" of the Northern Song Dynasty records: "There are many fairy flowers on the land, so it is called Xiangshan." Zhongshan is also one of the representative cities of Cantonese culture and one of the birthplaces of Cantonese cuisine.
