FAQ:
Q - What is this game?
A - Joust (NES) is a home title based on the arcade game of the same name.
Q - Can the pterodactyl be defeated?
A - Yes, on a very specific and unforgiving hitbox. Generally works if it's on your exact ground level and you charge straight into it. Sometimes you can get lucky and KO it immediately as it appears on top of you. It awards you 1,000 points.
Q - What is "50K"?
A - It means "try to obtain 50,000 points in the game as fast as possible". Time begins when the player bird first appears, and ends on the frame which 50K points is attained.
Q - What is "100K"?
A - Same thing, but with 100K.
Q - What platform are you playing on? Is it emulator?
A - Yes, Mesen 0.9.9.
Q - Why don't you do [insert idea here] instead?
A - NESCardinality added some optimizations to the routing and gameplay in order to attain his world records before mine, and there's simply a ton of safety that has to be observed in Joust. But there may be things still to find! I'd be interested if you tried this out for yourself, using any method you want! Comment here with your thoughts if you'd like.
Q - Why are you playing this game, of all games?
A - Joust is one of the first games I ever played at a very young age. It happened to be the game that NESCardinality was grinding when I started watching his stream regularly in 2018. Since then, I've kept meaning to try speedrunning it myself, and every time I checked the leaderboard I noticed that the world records had never changed. I finally got off my butt and am giving it a shot! It was a blast to be able to compete with him after he beat one of my world records.
Q - What's the point of this?
A - Speedrunning is a fun and extremely challenging way of adding replay value to your all-time favorite games, or any game at all! The first time I tried speedrunning River City Ransom EX (GBA) in 2015, no speedruns existed on the official speedrun.com leaderboards, so I had to create the page myself. I left it for years and forgot all about it. Then Redd92 beat my world record, and once I found out, I felt a brand new competitive fire! It motivated me to create entirely new routes for categories in that game, so I could experience new challenges with one of my favorite games ever. It's been indescribable fun, and triumphing over the game like this after it beats you down feels absolutely otherworldly. I experienced the same thing with Family Dog, a game I'd never played before attempting to speedrun it.
