Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who was the first to circumnavigate the world in 1519-1522. He was born in 1480 in northern Portugal and became a skilled sailor. Magellan was determined to find a western route to the Spice Islands and organized an expedition of five ships and 270 men. His voyage opened the way for further exploration and trade between Europe and Asia. Magellan’s accomplishments remain a significant milestone in maritime history.

1520 ഏപ്രിൽ അവസാനം. പോർട്ട് സെന്റ് ജൂലിയനിലെ മാരക പരീക്ഷണത്തെ അതിജീവിച്ച മഗല്ലൻ ഇപ്പോൾ അതിശക്തനാണ്. എന്നാൽ എത്രയും വേഗം സൗത്ത് സീയിലേക്കുള്ള കുറുക്ക് വഴി കണ്ടെത്തുക എന്ന ആഗ്രഹം ഇതുവരെയും നടക്കാതിരുന്നത് മഗല്ലനെ അസ്വസ്ഥനാക്കി. അങ്ങിനെ തന്റെ കപ്പൽ വ്യൂഹമായ അർമദ ദി മൊളുക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും ചെറിയ കപ്പലായ സാന്ററിയാഗോയിലെ ക്യാപ്റ്റൻ സെറാനോയോട് തെക്കോട്ട് കുറച്ചുകൂടി സഞ്ചരിച്ച് സൗത്ത് സീയിലേക്കുള്ള കപ്പൽച്ചാൽ കണ്ടെത്തി മടങ്ങി വരുവാൻ മഗല്ലൻ ഉത്തരവിട്ടു. സെറാനോയുടെ നാവികർ അയാളെ സ്പെയിനിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുവാൻ നിർബന്ധിക്കുവാൻ സാധ്യതയുണ്ടെന്ന് മനസിലാക്കിയ മഗല്ലൻ, വളരെക്കുറച്ച് ഭക്ഷണം മാത്രമാണ് സാന്റോയാഗോയിൽ കൊടുത്തയച്ചത്. കൂട്ടത്തിൽ തിരികെ വരുമ്പോൾ സെറാനോക്ക് സമ്മാനങ്ങളും വാഗ്ദാനം ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.
അങ്ങിനെ തെക്കോട്ട് സഞ്ചരിച്ച സെറാനോ 1520 മെയ് മൂന്നിന് മറ്റൊരു ഭീമൻ അഴിമുഖത്തിന്റെ മുന്നിൽ ചെന്ന് പെട്ടു.
