Even during World War 2, there were executions being carried out inside the Soviet Union of captured German soldiers. These men were tried and accused of horrific war crimes, but they were subjected to huge public executions on gallows in front of thousands of people. These executions took place in cities such as Leningrad and for Stalin were a powerful tool to show that he was dealing with his enemies.
