Railroad Switching & Huge Storage Train On A Short Line Railroad In Ohio! Mixed Freight Train Picks Up Extra Locomotive & A Cut Of Loaded Grain Cars! This is the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad CCET Making Railroad Shunting Moves in Sardinia & Winchester, Ohio. This is the Norfolk Southern Peavine Line that is leased to the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad.
The reality show starts in Sardinia, Ohio. The train has just arrived with 2 locomotives and a long cut of cars. The train was on its way to pick up 20 more cars loaded with grain and needed a 3rd locomotive. We see the train tack on another GP15-1 to add to the other GP15-1 and SD40-2. The long train then proceeds through a railroad crossing in Sardinia.
Next, the train is seen passing through Macon, Ohio where a couple of lucky school buses get to wait for the train. We also see the overgrown and rusty siding where Cohen Recycling used to be. I don't know what happened and why they left. This was a great customer and one of my favourite places to film railroad switching. The old N&W CPLs were shut off in 2005.
Then we go to Winchester, Ohio to see some railroad switching. The train is working the Winchester Ag Services spur. The train spots 6 cars on one of the 4 tracks that the elevator uses and picks up 20 loads. The SD40-2 which was the leading locomotive was left about a quarter mile down the track first. It was left there because the spur does not permit 6 axle locomotives. After the train is done switching we see the whole train pass by at the railroad crossing. This is a very long train for CCET! It is rare to see one that long so I got pretty lucky. After I filmed this the train went about 4 miles to Mount Zion where they set some cars off in a siding for temporary storage. I believe they shut down for the day here also. It was close to 4pm and they usually stop running shortly after that time.
The way I located this train on the east end of the line is interesting. I was taking a nap and had a hand held radio sitting on the window sill next to me. I was monitoring the road channel, 160.860 and the end of train device, 452.9375 when I heard a chirp on the EOT frequency. That told me there was a train approaching so I headed westbound to look for it. The signal got weaker so I knew I was going the wrong direction. I turned around and headed east. After about 5 miles I noticed the signal coming in very strong so I knew I was going the right direction. I couldn't see it due to heavy vegetation so I wound up passing it ( leap frogging ) and pulled over in Sardinia to wait for it. I figured it would be a rock train since it had an EOT.
