By popular demand, and just in time for this year's tennis championships, I headed down to Wimbledon to see what, if anything, it has to offer on the historic pub front.
I was at least partly following in the footsteps of Oliver Reed, who established his "Wimbledon Run" pub crawl (sometimes referred to as the "Wimbledon 8") in this neck of the woods.
Along the way we talk about:
- Oliver Reed's somewhat overzealous attempts to buy a field for his horse, between pints at the Dog & Fox.
- The (still today) controversial poetry of Algernon Charles Swinburne, a one time regular at the Rose and Crown.
- The risk of Wombles when crossing Wimbledon Common.
- More talk of former coaching inns and beer houses.
- As always I complain about Farrow & Ball paint, and grapefruit flavoured beer.
