This video compares the ending BGM “Finale” from Dragon Quest across the Famicom, MSX & MSX2, Super Famicom, and Game Boy versions, and also features a remix of these sound sources.
Previously, I uploaded a video with only the remix at https://youtu.be/w09ilm8NuWY, but this time I’ve included a comparison of each version as well. The remix has also been further adjusted.

This is the very first ending theme in the Dragon Quest series. The piece opens with a fanfare as the Hero and Princess Lora set out on a new journey, then transitions to a gentle yet bittersweet melody. It beautifully blesses the journey of the Hero, Princess Lora, and the player while carrying a sense of farewell. This touching composition truly showcases Koichi Sugiyama’s talent.
The differences among versions can be summarized as follows: the Famicom and MSX versions, and the Super Famicom and Game Boy versions. The earlier two, despite hardware limitations, are arranged so the original feel is preserved; the latter two feature more orchestral arrangements. The overall length and tempo of the piece don’t vary much.
The remix is based on the Game Boy’s arrangement, which sits between the styles of the other versions. Since the song has many dynamic changes, I’ve tweaked it extensively, striving to retain the original feel as much as possible.
The footage in the video is from each version's ending screen, but the audio has been separately extracted and processed for clearer listening. The visuals are aligned to match the music but may differ slightly from the original hardware. In the remix, all ending scenes play simultaneously, and the playback speed has been adjusted so they finish together, even though each version’s length differs. Please keep this in mind while watching.
