In January 1963, Helen Klaben booked a private flight to San Francisco to save money on a ticket. The pilot, 42-year-old Ralph Flores, was headed back to the Bay Area Fairbanks, Alaska. He had an extra seat in his single-engine plane. After landing in Whitehorse, they were delayed due to bad weather, but they were cleared to continue their trip after a couple days. What Helen didn't know was Ralph wasn't a very experienced pilot. After battling a turbulent takeoff and bad weather, Ralph was lost and was burning through fuel fast to find his way. Ralph was switched to the final fuel tank things were looking dire for the two. When the engine started to sputter, they prepared for an emergency landing and crashed the plane deep in the Yukon wilderness during winter. With the plane deviating far from the path, rescue would not find them, and the two were now in a dire survival situation.
